Hot Glass
 Must be gallery quality
 No sharp edges
 No paper marks
 No punty areas
 Joints must be fully fused, not tacked
 Must not wobble
 Must be cold worked if necessary

Painted Glass
 Paint must not be over fired.
 No smeared edges.

Cast Glass
 No obvious mold marks.
 Well integrated glass – meaning the piece has been fired well enough to adhere the glass into a structurally sound object.
 A piece that has bubbles that have erupted on any surface will not be acceptable.
 All plaster or other mold medium will be cleaned from the piece
 No stress fractures

Warm Glass
Fused

 No stress fractures
 No glass burrs
 Check bottom and sides of piece to ensure that no kiln wash or other release products have adhered
 If glues or adhesives are used, they should be discrete and hidden. No smears or oozing should
be evident
 While bubbles within the piece are allowable and often desirable, bubbles that have erupted on any
surface will not be acceptable.

Mosaic
 Grout Lines smooth and consistent throughout the work.
 Excess grout removed with no trace of grout on glass.
Abrasive
 Blasted edges clean and smooth
 Quality and consistency of blasting
 Smooth transitions from shaded to solid etching
 Carved blasting – even and consistent depth
 Surface edge blasting – consistent shading

Leaded Construction
 Well fitting glass. Glass fully engaged in lead channels.
 No raw edges of glass showing.
 Solder joints smooth and relatively small.
 Where 2 lead lines cross each other, they must match up both ways.
 Where 2 lead lines are meant to merge into one line, the junction is smooth.
 When panel is puttied, all excess putty and whiting are removed. No putty or whiting are visible on the finished panel.
 Patina, if used, is applied uniformly.

All Cold Work

 Cleanliness!
 Straight lines are straight.
 Circles, ovals and curved lines are smooth and precise.
 Circles and ovals are true circles and ovals.
 Geometric shapes are accurate i.e. diamonds,triangles, etc.
 Structurally sound.
 Reinforced where appropriate Copper Foil Construction
 Copper foil lines are uniform
 Minimal variance in width from one end of the solder seam to the other end.
 Smooth solder beads.
 Uniform appearance of patina (if one is used).
 No copper foil “ends” showing where foil overlaps.
 No “backside” of copper foil showing.
 Precision cutting of glass without large gaps filled with solder.

 Manufactured bevels can not be used as a focal point of the piece.

CATEGORIES

1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards will be given for each of the following categories. Select ONE category you wish to have your entry judged, based on the technique you feel is the focus of the piece. If more than one technique is used and they are of equal importance to the piece, select the Mixed Technique category. All work must be original design and each piece must be unique, no production work will be allowed.

Hot—All torch, lamp and furnace work

Warm—All kiln work techniques

Cold—Lead and copper foil, mosaic, abrasive

Mixed Technique—Two or more of the glass techniques of hot, warm and/or cold

Happy Accidents—Just for fun!

 

Student*

1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in this category will be awarded a one year GAF membership.

This category is designed for someone who has taken a class in the past year. Students must have their instructor fill out and sign the student portion of the entry form.

Novice*

This category is designed as an intermediate step after the Student Category. Designs may be original or from a pattern. Artists may only enter the Novice Category for 3 consecutive years in any one technique.

*Patterns are allowed for the Student and Novice categories, but must have a copyright release from the publisher if the piece is for sale.

HOW TO ENTER

There is a limit of 10 (ten) entries per artist.

Artwork may not be released earlier. GAF and the DBG will not be responsible for any work not picked up by 4pm.

ELIGIBILITY

The exhibit is open to all glass artists. Works submitted to previous Glass At The Gardens Shows may not be re-submitted. Utilization of the theme ,“Ancient Origins” in your piece is optional. If piece includes another artist’s work, credit must be given by adding “designed by___”, “fabricated by___”, etc. to the bottom of the entry form.

Stepping stones, imitation stained glass, plastics, and kits are unacceptable. Factory made bevels and bevel clusters may be used if part of a border. The art glass must be the majority and main focal point of the piece.

DELIVERY OF WORK

Check-in and registration

Sept. 22nd, 2008

Noon to 6p.m. on Monday

All entries are juried on the evening of
check-in day. Those who are not accepted,
will be notified on Tuesday.

 

All artwork must be ready for display. All
necessary hardware (eye-hooks, etc.) must
be attached and special stands or mountings included. GAF will provide hanging chain. Hanging racks, tables and some pedestals
are provided.

 

Artwork that does not require transmitted light and is designed to be hung on a wall, must fit on provided wall panels that measure 34” horizontal by 37” vertical or artist should provide own display stand.

 

NOTE: Artwork that requires artist-only
handling and set-up must check-in from
4-6pm on the 22nd. You must also be
available on the 23rd if the hanging
committee wants the artwork moved.

Artwork pick up

There will be another show coming in directly after GAF. ALL art work MUST be picked up BETWEEN3-4 pm on October 3. Make arrangements to get it picked up. NO EXCEPTIONS,
we have an
hour to break down the show…. There is no place to store art, and therefore
ALL ART must be removed
between 3-4 pm.
PERIOD.

COMMISSION STRUCTURE

A 35% sales commission will be deducted from the retail price of each piece sold. The Botanic Gardens receives 25% of all sales and GAF takes 10% to cover advertising, VISA/MasterCard fees and wrapping materials.

Basic JURY GUIDELINES

 

The entry jury will make their decisions based on the following criterion:

Craftsmanship—Includes cleanliness and
structural soundness.

Presentation—Framing and stands enhance

the work.

Artistry—Good design principles used, color selection and originality.

 

 

Gift Gallery

Artists approved for the Gift  Gallery selling, will be REQUIRED to work two (2) shifts during the show. A sign up sheet will be at registration desk. IF YOU DO NOT WORK YOUR SCHEDULED SHIFTS, the commission fees will be 50% instead of 35%.
